TOPIC: bioidentical hormones and periods
#32361
bioidentical hormones and periods 7 Months, 1 Week ago Karma: 0
I have been on bioidentical hormones since menopause (2000). I have not had a period. Today I was reading Suzanne Somer's book, "The Sexy Years" and she strongly advocates not taking HRT continuously. She, and the doctors she uses, believe it mimics pregnancy and can cause illness. She states women should not take HRT all month long and should allow themselves to have periods. If you have an opinion on this subject or more important, if you have any FACTS, please respond.

According to the North American Menopause Society, (NAMS) it is recommended to take HT in the smallest dose needed, for the shortest amount of time. It has been found that taking it for extended periods of time may slightly raise your risk of other diseases and conditions, certainly not mimicking pregnancy.

Hi Nicki,
First and foremost it's important to get advice from your clinician. You can also rely on professional organizations such as The North American Menopause Society www.menopause.org, also organizations like ACOG or Endrocine Society. I think they have valid information that you might consider following.
Warmly,
Karen
