TOPIC: I'm so frustrated
#38857
I'm so frustrated 6 Years, 8 Months ago Karma: 0
I'm 23 yo and have been with my bf for a year. We've tried tons of positions and a vibrator. I've also tried millions of times to please myself. I feel slightly excited, but, never orgasm. I don't know what's wrong here Is it possible that anti-depressants may be to blame?

Anti-depressants could be to blame. Many are known to have anorgasma as a side effect. How long have you been on anti-depressants? Were you able to orgasm before you started the medication?

There are some options for treating this type of side effect, if anti-depressants turn out to be the problem:

I've been on them since i was a preteen, so I don't THINK I've ever had one. But, I can't afford to go off of them.

It could, indeed, be the antidepressants, then. I would definitely recommend you read the article I linked, and talk to your psychiatrist about treatment options. There are many treatment options discussed in the article that don't involve permanently getting off your meds, and one might be right for you.
It could be something other than the anti-depressants, of course, but I'd start there because it is the most obvious choice. Many antidepressants have very high rates of sexual side effects.
If you have any chronic medical conditions or are on any other medication (including birth control pills), thost are also possibilities. Constant stress, lack of good blood flow (excersize can help with this, and often helps depression, as well), smoking, illegal drugs and a host of other things can also be physical reasons for anorgasma. There are also, of course, psychological causes such as repressive upbringing, negative self image, and simply trying to hard to reach the Big "O."

[This message has been edited by dona1 (edited 02 December 2003).]

I completely understand what you are going through, I am 32 years old and I have NEVER had an orgasm. It really makes me feel like so much less of a woman, but luckily my husband has always understood. I have been on depression meds on & off for years, but I have been having sex since I was 18, and my depression meds were not started till well into my adult years, so depression meds were not the cause of my problems.
My sister who is multi orgasmic has been on a couple of different depression meds and has had to QUIT taking them because she was unable to acheive orgasm while on the meds, I think it was either Prozac, Paxil, or Zoloft, not sure what two gave her the trouble, but she talked to the doctor about this, and it is VERY common for someone on certain depression meds to have trouble having an orgasm.
I really hope that your problem is from your meds, because they can be switched, for me it is a constant frustration hearing other women talk about how they can have an orgasm, and yet no matter what I do, no matter how long we have sex, no matter what new positions, etc.. I just cannot have one, it really stinks, but I have learned to just enjoy the closeness of sex, and be satisfied by the way it feels while it lasts I have never had an orgasm, so I have nothing to compare it to, and sex feels wonderful to me all the same
Good luck to you, I hope that you talk to a doctor about this!!
