painful orgasm-HELP PLEASE

Hi,
I'm new here and I hope someone here will know what I'm talking about.
I have horrible pain inside when I have an orgasm. It doesn't hurt at the beginning of sex, it starts to sting when I get turned on, then when I orgasm it hurts so bad I have to stop everything.
I was diagnosed with levator spasms. the levator ani is the muscle group that surrounds the pelvic area and down around the anus. All of this spasms and burns, stings, HURTS.
I've begun to avoid sex, and when I do have sex I avoid an orgasm. The spasms are much worse when it's an orgasm due to sex instead of masterbation. I think that's simply because I'm more excited.
I've tried muscle relaxers, they used to help, but not any more. I went to a physical therapist who specializes in pelvic pain. I did the excercises (and still do some of them) but they never helped very much.
Has anyone out there had any experience with this?
I'm getting married this year, and I don't want to start my marriage on the wrong foot. He is very understanding, but it does get to him.
Thank you for any help. Wendy
* MODERATOR'S NOTE
I suggest you post this on OURGYN.com bulletin board and OURGYN/VULVAR PAIN
Re: painful orgasm-HELP PLEASE

What did you do during the physical therapy appts, and for how long? Physical therapy combined with muscle relaxants is the answer to your problem; however, you do have to give it some time....about 2 times/week of PT for at least 8 weeks. Also, the physical therapy should include internal as well as external manual therapy. my book, Heal Pelvic Pain, will help guide you towards what you should and should not be doing? it is possible that you may need to try another physical therapist.
Good luck. amy stein
