LEEP Question

I had a LEEP done about a year and a half ago. I just had another done a month ago. My gyno is having me come in, in April for my Pap and an ECC. What is an ECC? I don't remember having to have this done the first time. I do have a different doctor this time, and she does tend to do an extremely thurough job. So, anyway I was just wondering what an ECC is and if I have any reason to worry? I was also wondering about having children. I am 25 years old and have not had any children yet. My husband and I would like to try within the next year or so. Is it possible after having two LEEPS and do I have anything I should be concerned about? Thank you so much!!

Re: LEEP Question

Hi Lindsay-
An ECC is a gentle sampling of the canal of the cervix- sort of like what's done in a Pap, only a little more tissue. It just takes a minute or two, causing minimal cramps.
Women who have had multiple surgeries on their cervix may have some problems with pregnancy, although it's rare.
The two issues are the possibility of decreases in cervical mucous- making it more difficult to conceive, and a weakening of the cervix itself, called cervical incompetence. You should see your doctor to discuss these two potential problems. Most women with this history do well.
Good luck!
