Arginine cannot be absorbed topically. It cannot be absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract without the assistance of an active uptake carrier protein. In the smooth muscle cells of the blood vessels it is converted to nitric oxide by an enzyme called nitric oxide synthase. Nitric oxide causes an increase in cyclic guanylyl monophosphate (GMP) which alters calcium levels causing dilation of the vessels. Phosphodiesterase breaks down cyclic GMP thus ending the vasodilation. Viagra works by blocking phosphodiesterase thus allowing elvated levels of cyclic GMP to be maintained.<P>Manufacturers who put arginine in topical products point out that arginine is the precursor of nitric oxide which is essential in vasocongestion of the genitals.
