Re: Calling All Sex-workers.
There have almost always been lubricants around. Aloe vera was commonly used in the middle ages. Saliva, of course, has always been there and still remains very popular today. This doesn't take care of the arousal issues, but since most men don't understand the arousal of a woman (speaking in physical terms of what happens), they wouldn't know if she was "tight" or just simply not aroused. Sex didn't need to be comfortable or pleasurable for a woman, she just had to be able to act. Like all jobs, she was doing it for money. There are days none of us like work, but get paid to act like we're happy if we're in customer service. Also, most prostitutes in former eras were also entertainers, working in brothels or bars. They frequently drank to excess while entertaining costumers, and this could be factor in loosening their inhibitions or at least making the idea more palatable.
In case anyone is wondering, I belong to a living history group and my husband spent many years living in and researching several cultures. This type of thing comes up occasionally.
