Re: Testosterone 2%

My wife has been on Testim 1% prescribed by same Dr. as you are seeing. Will be about 6 to 8 weeks soon. Seeing him agian this week. After about 4 weeks she did notice increased sensation. Our situation is based on stopping estratest for about 1 year or more after 9 years or so on the med since a total Hysterectomy. Waiting for better results on the desire end but hopeful.
I did wonder why we did not start on 2% cream after reading a lot of these posts, but assume the answer will be " caution first" and then crank it up if necessary.
Good luck !

Re: Testosterone 2%

Rain....
I've heard *****give figures in the range of as much as 6 months for libido, and much longer, as much as a year for orgasm issues.
I don't know what to make of these time frames, as they are significantly longer than others I've heard. I guess the message to take away from this, is that the change may be much slower than we'd like and perhaps more subtle than we realize.
I'd certainly not plan on any serious change for 90 days at least, and potentially as much as a year. Sensation, at least in our situation, seems to be the first change.
Cheers,
Greg
------------------
My profile has my email address and website. Re: Testosterone 2%

Good luck to you as well ! Maybe with 2% cream you will see results twice as fast. That should be interesting.

Moderator
Can I have some clairifcation...
I can't even mention Andre Guay's name?
It's vital to the whole context of what I said. It makes a difference if Mickey Mouse said that vs. Andy Guay.
I wasn't discussing his practice, his care etc. I was simply telling someone what he has said. Since you post links to abstracts he is the author of on your website, I can't imagine why it would be uncouth to discuss what he has said about T and mention him by name.

Rain
You will need to carefully monitor T levels and see. How much you apply and how often are significant factors. The properties of the cream and absorbtion rates vary. How much T you will need to boost your levels is also variable from person to person. (ie. How much T it will require to raise T levels 1pg/ml for two different people will be different.) Thus what is appropriate for you may not be for someone else.
Have you had your total and free T levels checked? By what method and what were the values and ranges?
Cheers,
Greg
------------------
My profile has my email address and website. Re: Testosterone 2%

paciente, Testim has an absorption enhancer in it. 2% testosterone with an absorption enhancer would be too much. 2% testosterone from a compounding pharmacist (with no absorption enhancer) is different.

Re: Testosterone 2%

According to Susan Rako, it should take 3-4 weeks "at the outside" for testosterone supplementation to take effect. Some women notice beneficial effects after only a week. She also says a woman who has never had much of a sex drive is not likely to benefit from testosterone supplementation. She also says the following:
"A blood test is NOT the way to tell if a person is deficient in testosterone. I'm afraid that the matter is more complex and is better evaluated in a woman who has had good sensitivity and function and who we have reason to know that her ovaries are starting to shut down. Menopause or hysterectomy. And that NOW her sensitivity and function are diminishing."
(I just started reading Susan Rako's viewpoints in more detail. It seems she and I are are in agreement on many testosterone issues.)

[This message has been edited by sharon3 (edited 17 June 2003).]

Re: Testosterone 2%

Is there such a thing as "Testim " 2% ? I never thought to ask. Are the 2% creams people are discussing only compounded ? Guess I will find out this week at Dr. visit. IF it is available why do you say it would be too much ? Side Effects ?????

Re: Testosterone 2%

Yes side effects. For example, irritability, as well as long-term side effects from chronic long-term use of a dose that is too high. Apparently there is a small window within which a woman who is testosterone "deficient" will experience a positive response from testosterone supplementation. Each woman is different. There is no reason for a woman to take too much testosterone. Regarding Testim, it only comes in 1% (50mg per 5g tube of gel, about 10% of the testosterone is actually absorbed). Testim is approved for men.
(Is there a math wiz in the building? Isn't Testim way too high a dose for a woman? It's absorbed over a 24 hour period.)
[This message has been edited by sharon3 (edited 17 June 2003).]

Re: Testosterone 2%

Is everyday too much?
I suppose it depends on your current T levels/how low those levels currently are.

Re: Testosterone 2%

It doesn't take a math whiz to figure some alternatives to applying 5g of product from either Testim or Androgel.
Testim, from what I've heard, comes in a dispenser (tube) that allows the user to dispense less than 5 grams at a time. Once a user finds out what a gram or half a gram looks like, then it's probably pretty accurate. You know if you use 1g/day a tube ought to last 5 days. If it doesn't, the you know you've applied too much, if it lasts longer, apply a bit more.
Androgel is easily (perhaps easily is an overstatment) removed from the packet and transferred to a 5-10 cc syringe. Then the user can dispense in any prescribed amount in doses as little as 1/5 cc.
A 1cc volume dose will give a delivered dose of about 1mg per day - a pretty reasonable dose for many. I believe AG starts at 0.5g (cc)/day and works up.
What's too much - well, I think one ought to use the lowest dose that give appropriate relief without getting way above the "norm" ranges of the FAI or EqD Free T test.
This method is almost completely comparable to the methods used for compounded product. The only difference is the source of the drug, compounded vs. mass manufactured.
On another subject...
I'm planning to ask around, but wonder if the the folks at the pharma found that a 1% product was better delivered than a 2% product, thus they only produced a 1% gel or cream product. I just know that for a man, applying 5g to as much as 10g of product, one would nearly be slathering their whole torso with androgel. *grin* Given that I've wondered why they only produced a 1% product. I suppose one real problem would be measureing much smaller doses.
Cheers,
Greg
[This message has been edited by distressed_12345 (edited 17 June 2003).]
