testosterone

My doctor gave me a prescription for testosterone 10 mg, 2.5mg every other day, because he said that my level was low and I have been complaining FOR YEARS about no desire for sex. Anyone here taking it? If so, any side affects?

Re: testosterone

I got your email:
Was not sure if I should reply...or post here.
I'll assume you're taking methyl-testosterone (MT) Brand name: Estratest HS - I think...
Things should be quite similar to other forms of T. Yet, MT can act more quickly and more dramatically.
I'd be careful to watch for signs of androgen excess. (Excessive hair growth, serious acne, lowered voice etc.) You shouldn't see these issues under a provider who manages things well, but there are more than a few who don't.
I'll see if I can dig up a post or two for you that I've done in the past that explains some issues about MT.
In essence, it doesn't bind to SHBG - thus all added MT becomes Free T. (This isn't true of bio-identical T.)
It drives down the production of SHBG - perhaps more greatly than bio-identical T. This means that more of your body produced T, more will be Free T.
The basic premise is: All MT is Free, and also greater bio Free T. These two factors may cause higher magnitude effects.
Finally, in the long run, if MT works given an appropriate length of time for a trial, I'd consider moving to a bio-identical form of T.
There's a thread here that covers this...
www.newshe.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/000831.html
(There's also a whole lot of agitation on that thread. Read the posts from "Tootie" - you might even post a follow-up request. She might occasionally come by and would respond to a post.)
Best,
Greg
------------------
See the icons at the top of this post for my profile and more information.
Also note, I am *not* a doctor, and this is not intended as medical advice - Please talk to your doctor about your concerns.
