vaginal itching

Help!
Just after my period, I have terrible vaginal itching. For a while my doc treated it with diflucan and when that didn't work, terazol. But we don't think it was ever really a yeast infection to begin with, although after the terazol it seemed better. Then my period came again and on the last day of it, the itching returned. He has given me nystatin for the itching, no relief. Now I have premarin cream but am afraid to use it because of other med. conditions I have that may be affected by it. What else can I do? I am 45 years old and have never had this problem before. My pharmacist suggested rephresh and a friend suggested replens, but I don't feel a dryness, just this incredible itching as soon as my period leaves. When it shows up, the itching is gone.
If anyone has any suggestions, please help.
thanks,
woofie

Re: vaginal itching

I have had trouble with the same problem since I was about 45-50 yrs. old and have found that boric acid suppositories are the only thing that has helped me. The yeast, bacterial and fungus creams that the doctors always seem to want to prescribe seem to make it worse and create an imbalance between yeast and bacteria flora in the vagina. I have been told my vaginas PH is not acidic enough. This could also be part of your problem just before your period.
Ive also found that putting about 1 cup of salt in your bath water really helps. I've tried baking soda, but the salt works better. It also helps soothe genital irritation after intercourse.

Re: vaginal itching

Perimenopause can cause vaginal itching.

Perimenopause usually begins three to five years before a woman's final menstrual period. Fluctuations in hormone levels may be causing your vaginal itching. A drop in estrogen causes the vaginal walls to thin and can produce a dryness or itching.

If your itching is related to menopause, you may consider asking your doctor about estrogen cream or tablets to insert vaginally.

Re: vaginal itching

I have had this problem for over 6 years. At times, I thought I was going crazy, which was contributed to by the many doctors who provided yeast medication or topicals that did not work. I think I may have found something, finally, that works. At least, in the last 2 months, I have been having days with no symptoms.I have been using Yeast Arrest Suppositiories. Its main ingredient is Boric Acid. I also use HLC Candaclear.

Re: vaginal itching

Sounds really annoying. How old are you? Do you have any other symptoms of perimenopause/menopause? Let us know what your doctor says.

Re: vaginal itching

You may want to look into a long lasting vaginal moisturizer. Many women find this solution satisfactory.
