osteoporosis

The North American Menopause Society recently released an updated guide to osteoporosis management and treatment options for postmenopausal women. No ground breaking new information was available for preventing osteoporosis. The report definitely stressed the importance of bone mineral density testing and taking certain preventative lifestyle measures (i.e., diet, exercise, etc.).

A few days after the report was released, another study hit the press. It claimed that a popular drug therapy for treating osteoporosis (bisphosphonates) is linked to a disease that actually kills the jaw bone (osteonecrosis).

This is big news for people who have already committed to bisphosphonate treatment for osteoporosis. The public and healthcare professionals should be aware of these side effects.

Look for highlights from the latest North American Menopause Society's osteoporosis press release and information on the jaw disease linked to bisphosphonates on our website soon. I'll give you a link once it is posted.

Is anyone currently taking bisphosphonates for treating osteoporosis? If so, how do you feel about this news?
