surgical menopause

I came across a post in the "sexual pain disorder and gyn topics" forum about someone who was interested in getting a hysterectomy. That inspired me to start a new topic in this forum about surgical menopause.

Surgical menopause (or menopause induced by surgery) does quite a number on your body. If both ovaries are removed in surgery, it is common to experience intense menopausal symptoms (i.e., hot flashes).

There is no gradual transition into menopause here. Hormone levels drop instantly. The hormones that once protected you from osteoporosis and heart disease are no longer there. Symptoms of surgical menopause can be more severe and prolonged compared to those of natural menopause.

Before jumping into a hysterectomy, definitely explore how your body is going to react. There may be other options.

Re: surgical menopause

The chemotherapy I had did the same thing. Abrupt menopause really sucks, trust me.
