How long is perimenopause?

Greetings all!

I'm 47 and have been in perimenopause for what seems like FOREVER-at least 5-6 years.

I use no HRT, only soy isoflavones and black cohosh, etc. I work out 3-4x/week and do strength training daily-one muscle group/day.

I've had one or two hot flashes and only one occurrence of night sweats, as I recall.

I am a PROUD VIRGIN!

Re: How long is perimenopause?

Welcome to the boards, redhotchick! It sounds like you are taking control of your health in a positive way. You are probably keeping your hot flashes and night sweats at bay by exercising.

Perimenopause typically begins 3-5 years before a woman's final menstrual period. The average age of menopause is around 51. So, your one or two hot flashes are probably due to your hormones starting to fluctuate. Perimenopause can last a few months to a few years. Some women experience symptoms similar to menopause at this time but everyone is different!

If you want to learn more about perimenopause, I encourage you to visit our website: www.redhotmamas.org.

There is lots of information on women's health (not just menopause). Eating right, exercising regularly and educating yourself is all part of staying healthy and preparing your body for "the change". So, keep up the good work!
