My Battle With Dry Eyes

Hi everyone,
I want to let everyone know about The Dry Eye Book Club I just started up with The Red Hot Mamas. In the coming months, I will be commenting on some of my favorite tear-jerkers, including The Deep End of the Ocean, To Kill a Mockingbird, Little Women, Gone with the Wind and Love Story. As you read along with me, I will provide my thoughts below. So come back to the site as often as you like.

When I wrote The Deep End of the Ocean 10 years ago, I didn't know it was going to be this huge! A number one New York Times best-selling novel, chosen as the first book for Oprah Winfrey's Book Club and named by USA Today in 2007 as one of the most influential books of the past 25 years.

For me, it was even more of a gift, a surprise and a delight, to meet people for whom The Deep End of the Ocean was the first book they'd read since high school. It touched my heart that this book changed their lives. They call it the first of Oprah Winfrey's 'inspirational women' stories.

So while I experienced professional success with The Deep End of the Ocean, on a personal front, it was when I started writing the book that my vision would become blurry and my eyes would itch and feel irritated – as if I had a speck of dust in them – after a day of working on the computer or after driving. By evening, my eyes felt tired when reading to my children... This was the new beginning of another story!

So, we started The Dry Eye Book Club to raise awareness, educate people about dry eyes and just have fun! Join us next month by reading To Kill a Mockingbird Follow along, ask me questions, make your own comments.
