contraception at 54 years old

my gyn suggested contraceptive foam. it seems that it is very messy and often the foam does not come out of the can at all. does anyone else have this problem? i have heard about prefilled applicators. does anyone have experience with those?

Re: contraception at 54 years old

Dear new member,

First, thanks for finding our site and logging onto it. Hope that we can provide you with the information you need. Many women complain that the contraceptive foams and creams are quite messy. Spermicidal foam can also be inserted directly with an applicator and that may be a little less messy for you. You do have other options which you should discuss with your doctor, such as, a contraceptive spermicide films which again are inserted in the vagina where they dissolve. Some women claim the films are not as messy as many of the creams and foams. The only drawback to spermicidal films is that they don't provide additional lubrication which many women need when they are experiencing menopause. I would discuss this option with your doctor.
