Re: hysterectomy and brain fog

Dear Bonnie,
Thank you for logging onto our website. First, I hope that your have shared your issues with your doctor about vaginal dryness, pain with sex, and foggy brain. I mention this as women tell me all the time that they are too intimidated to talk to their doctors about issues "down there" and especially when it deals with sex. It is not always obvious to your doctor that you are experiencing vaginal dryness if you don't communicate how you are feeling. So, by all means do so. And, one thing you may also discuss with your doctor, is for him/her to give you a vaginal maturation index (VMI) test which is designed to evaluate vaginal deterioration. It's simply a smear of vaginal mucus and cells which are placed on a slide and will be looked at through a microscope. The VMI will not give estrogen levels, however, it will provide useful information about vaginal deterioration. Your doctor may recommend estrogen therapy if you are estrogen deficient and this is the cause of your problem. Carefully weigh your benefits and risks with your doctor of taking estrogen therapy. As far as the foggy brain, many women who experience hot flashes, also experience them at night. Sometimes, their sleep is affected and the next day women feel like they are jet lagged, and this creates that foggy brain feeling. Again, discuss with your doctor ways to abate these symptoms. I wish you good health and please let me know how your are doing. Warmly, Karen
