Nerve regrowth after surgery

Hi Dr. Goldstein,
Someone mentioned that one of the reasons that surgery is not successful in the long run is that the nerves can grow back and the pain returns in about 4 to 5 years. Is this possible?
Thanks!
Toby

Re: Nerve regrowth after surgery

It is not possible for the nerves to regrow because you replace the vestibular tissue with a completely different type of tissue- vaginal tissue. Nerve don't "re-grow" there, just like they never grew there in the first place. Secondly, I do not know of any study (nor in my experience treating more than 250 women who had a vestibulcetomy) that mentions recurrence after 4-5 years.

quote:
Originally posted by Toby:
Hi Dr. Goldstein,
Someone mentioned that one of the reasons that surgery is not successful in the long run is that the nerves can grow back and the pain returns in about 4 to 5 years.
