TOPIC: Mirena IUD

2 years, 11 months ago #24076

Mirena IUD

I am 25, and was on the contraceptive pill from age 14 to 23. I began to have burning during sex at age 21, and went off the pill when I was diagnosed. I also received pelvic floor physiotherapy. My VVS has improved, and I can have sex comfortably most of the time (as long as I use lubrication).

My partner and I use condoms now, but would much prefer another contraceptive option since we do not want to have children for several years. I have heard that the hormone levels in Mirena are lower, and are less likely to cause side effects. However, if it is likely to lower my libido, make it harder to get lubricated (which is already difficult), or cause my VVS to worsen, it's not an option. Unfortunate, the copper IUD is not an option as I already have heavy periods with bad cramps.

Is Mirena a good option for women with VVS? What about diaphragms with spermicide? Or am I stuck using condoms?

Re: Mirena IUD

spinner84, here is a link to our website with an article by Dr. Andrew Goldstein on new choices in birth control. Hope this helps.

Re: Mirena IUD

Thanks for your quick reply. I read the link, but it doesn't address whether the hormone levels in Mirena will cause a problem for women with VVS. I was hoping that Dr. Goldstein might be able to suggest whether it increases the risk of making my symptoms worsen (since my VVS did get better since going off the pill). Thanks again though.
