painful annual exam and sex

I have been receiving my annual exam for about 10 years now, and it has been painful every single time. My obgyn has to use the smallest child's speculum on me in order to get the pap smear, and even then it still hurts.
I am about to have sex for the 1st time, and was wondering if my exam is an indication if sex will be very painful for me?
I get aroused quite easily and am always very wet during foreplay, so I hope this will help me. My boyfriend is very understanding, and is willing to do anything to help it not be so painful for me. He hasn't inserted anything into me as I am still nervous about the pain, but not being able to have sex is very frustrating for the both of us.
Any help would be very appreciated.

Is it painful when you use a tampon?

Re: painful annual exam and sex

Most women experience some discomfort the first couple of times of intercourse, but after that it should not be painful. If you have pain with the small speculum, it could be that the skin is very senstive and/or the muscles are tight. You can seek a healthcare provider that has experience with this type of pain. Most ob/gyn's don't have extensive training in pelvic pain and vulvar pain, so you need to seek a Gyn that specifically works with this population: nva.org, pelvicpain.org or a PT can assess the muscles, tissues and nerves: aptawomenshealth.org
