Vaginal Numbness

Almost 3 years ago, I was diagnosed with having a severly herniated disk on my L5-S1. The disk was pressing against my spinal cord and was causing a loss of sensation in the lower half of my body. This had quickly transpired over about a week following the last of a series of 3 epidurals I had received over a years time to help treat me for the severe back and leg pain I had been experiencing. When I finally went to the emergency room (it's a complicated story of events that occured before this) I received an emergency lumbar laminectomy to correct the problem. This immediately got me out of pain, however, I was left unable to urinate on my own for about a month. I can now urinate with no problem, however, I am left with a constant numbness in my vagina. The numbess initally covered my entire outer and inner vaginal area as well as my buttocks. Now, it is more the internal areas, with most sensation having now returned to the outer areas.
My question is, is it possible for this ever to come back? My nuerologist simply told me that it would come back eventiually, and no OB/GYN knows what to tell me. I really want to have a child and this has defintely affected my sex life with my husband, who miraculously has been nothing but patient with me! The other thing is, I have sex dreams where I feel like I am having an orgasm (which were no problem for me before this all started). I once heard that if your body has the sensation in a dream, the "triggers" are still there and something can be salvaged? I just wonder if anyone else has gone through this or if anyone has any advice.
I appreciate it vey much and I'm sorry for such a long post!
